AANDERAA

Robust and reliable instrument solutions for oceanographic and other environmental measurements

Aanderaa is a Norwegian developer and manufacturer of oceanographic, meteorological, and other specialized tools and solutions for collecting environmental data. Aanderaa’s specialisation is the production of highly reliable systems that are well-suited for long-term data gathering applications in remote areas with no electricity supply. Collected data can be stored internally or transferred in real time via a number of available connections.

Aanderaa’s solutions are known for being able to record time series data over exceptionally long time intervals. Operating such huge volumes of data and analysing it effectively can be a challenge. The integration of data collected by Aanderaa’s system with Clarify will make it easier to organize this information and utilize it for various insights.

History of Aanderaa

The Aanderaa company was founded in the early 1960s by Ivar Aanderaa, nature exploration enthusiast who wanted to create new instruments that would be able to conduct advanced and reliable measurements in the planet’s most difficult-to-reach and inhospitable for humans environments.

Ivar Aanderaa’s primary focus was deep sea exploration, and he was looking to design and produce a new instrument that would be used for measuring ocean currents over extensive periods of time and at considerable depths. Naturally, such a tool had to be extremely rugged, corrosion-resistant, able to withstand high water pressure and other forces of nature. Additionally, such a device had to function for extensive periods of time on one charge and record data. The equipment used for these purposes at the time wasn’t able to satisfy these needs.

Ivar Aanderaa, with assistance from the Christian Michelsen Institute, was able to make a number of technological advancements that enabled the creation of an innovative tool capable of withstanding deep depths and high water pressure that also was able to record data continuously while being deployed for several years. One of the most notable innovations, achieved by Aanderaa, was the creation of the first analog to digital converter that was required for the device, placed in a pressure-resistant tube, to be able to record and store large volumes of data for extensive time intervals

Original Aanderaa’s current meters were first deployed in 1968 in the Weddell Sea. What was planned as a one-year trial project ended up lasting 5 years as researchers were not able to collect the samples for additional 4 years due to unfavorable ice conditions. When two of the four current meters were recovered, researchers found that they collected over 12,000 hours of high-quality data, which at the time was the longest time series obtained from standalone measurement devices.

About Aanderaa company

Aanderaa Instruments was the original company founded by Ivar Aanderaa. In 2005, Aanderaa Instruments merged with another Norwegian company, Data Instruments. The newly created as a result of this merger company was named Aanderaa Data Instruments (AADI).

In 2009, Aanderaa Data Instruments was acquired by Nova Analytics, which itself was bought by ITT Corp. in 2010. Following a spinoff of Xylem from ITT in 2011, Aanderaa Data Instruments became a part of Xylem, a large American water technology provider.

Aanderaa’s products

Today, Aanderaa Data Instruments designs, manufactures and sells a wide range of products for measuring and monitoring in demanding environments, including sensors, tools and systems of various kinds.

Specifically, Aanderaa has an extensive product line of environmental and climate research solutions. Aanderaa’s systems for the environmental research applications include automatic weather stations, sensors for measuring specific parameters (temperature, pressure, oxygen, etc.), buoy systems, wave and tide stations, Seaguard RCM/CTD, Recording Doppler Current Profiler, and other products.

Aanderaa also manufactures road weather stations and traffic and road conditions monitoring systems. Aanderaa’s traffic counting and classifying systems are able to accurately detect and identify vehicles.

Additionally, Aanderaa produces the Loadtronic weighing system for wheel loader manufacturers, as well as a number of offshore operations monitoring systems for remote supervision of exploration and development sites in hard to reach locations.
